Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why do teeth turn yellow?

As you get older, your teeth naturally collect stains and change color. Some of this occurs because of natural wear and tear, but other factors also contribute, like drinking coffee, red wine, and soda.

The natural aging process also plays a role. Over the years, the outer layer of your teeth cracks and chips away. The interior of your teeth, called the dentin, is yellow in color and begins showing through. As more dentin becomes visible, your teeth appear more yellow in color.

What are some of the most common causes of yellow teeth?

Teeth yellow and gray for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Genetics
  • Foods like blueberries and red pasta sauce
  • Certain prescription medications
  • Fluoride exposure
  • Smoking cigarettes or using chewing tobacco

Being diagnosed with a chronic illness can also increase your risk. For example, people undergoing chemotherapy for neck or throat cancer commonly develop yellow teeth.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is an FDA-approved cosmetic dentistry technique designed to eradicate stains and restore your enamel to its original vibrant condition. It isn’t permanent, but it can undo years of discoloration to help you feel more confident.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Teeth whitening is safe and generally well tolerated. The majority of in-office whitening treatments use carbamide peroxide as their main bleaching ingredient, a harmless byproduct of hydrogen peroxide.

In addition, all of the providers at the Centre for Contemporary Dental Concepts have undergone specialized training and education on administering Zoom! In-office whitening safely and effectively.

What teeth whitening treatments do you offer?

Dr. Smallwood proudly offers Zoom! In-office teeth whitening and take-home whitening trays.

Zoom! In-office teeth whitening

Zoom! In-office teeth whitening is a state-of-the-art treatment that can make your teeth up to 8 shades lighter in just one session, though your individual results may vary. Before treatment, your provider covers your gums and tongue with a rubber dam to prevent exposure to the whitening solution.

Your dentist then applies a layer of whitening gel to the surface of each of your teeth. After the gel dries, your dentist points the WhiteSpeed blue LED lamp at your teeth, triggering a chemical whitening reaction.

Your dentist repeats these same steps three more times, which takes about 45 minutes. After your final WhiteSpeed blue LED treatment, your dentist applies a post-treatment gel to your teeth, reducing pain and sensitivity.

Take-home whitening trays

Dr. Smallwood and the team at the Centre for Contemporary Dental Concepts also offer custom take-home whitening trays designed to fit the unique contours of your mouth. Getting take-home whitening trays takes two separate appointments.

At your first appointment, your dentist takes a series of digital scans of your mouth and sends the information to a laboratory that manufactures your custom whitening trays. You’ll return a week or two later for your second appointment. There, Dr. Smallwood or another team member provides you with a list of instructions to follow carefully. In as little as one to two weeks, you’ll start seeing a significant improvement in the color and appearance of your smile.

Achieving the white, shiny smile of your dreams is as easy as one in-office treatment. Call the office or use the online booking tool to request your appointment today.
